Early in the 1920s, a violent guerrilla movement grew in Andhra Pradesh's Gudem Hills. The colonial authorities had blocked off huge portions of the forest here, making it impossible for locals to enter the forests to graze their cattle or to gather fuelwood and fruits. The hill people were outraged by this. They felt that their traditional rights were being denied, in addition to damaging their livelihoods.
