Detailed Solution

In the Madras Presidency, 35,000 trees were being cut annually for sleepers by the British government.
The rapid growth of the rail network began around 1860 and continued throughout the early 1900s. As the railways expanded across India, more and more trees were cut down. Over 35,000 trees were cut down each year for sleepers in the Madras Presidency alone. To meet the demand, the government awarded contracts to several people. These contractors started chopping down trees at will. Forests beside the railway tracks began to disappear at an alarming rate.
