In the 14th century, the tank in Hauz Khas, Delhi, was constructed by Alauddin Khilji to supply water to the Siri Fort area. This was a royal tank. The word Hauz Khas in Urdu is derived from the words 'Hauz', which means 'water tank', and 'Khas' means 'royal' or 'imperial.' Tughlaq dynasty leader Firuz Shah Tughlaq (1351–88) re-excavated the congested inflow channels and the sludge-filled tank. The tank's initial size was 50 acres, with proportions of 600 m wide by 700 m long and a 4 m water depth.
