Detailed Solution

In the 1830s, Thomas Babington Macaulay saw India as an uncivilised country that needed to be civilised.
By the 1830s, the attack on Orientalists had intensified. Thomas Babington Macaulay was one of the most outspoken and influential critics of the time. He saw India as an uncivilised country in need of civilisation. In his opinion, no branch of Eastern knowledge could match what England had generated. He urged the British government in India to stop wasting public money promoting Oriental learning because it was useless. Macaulay emphasised the importance of teaching English with vigour and passion. The English Education Act of 1835 was enacted in response to Macaulay's minute. The decision was made to make English the medium of instruction in higher education and to stop promoting Oriental institutions such as the Calcutta Madrasa and the Benaras Sanskrit College.
