In the 19th century, making primary education compulsory was an important step in acquiring children as a new category of readers. The publishing sector has grown critically dependent on the production of textbooks. In France, a children's press that published just works for kids was founded in 1857. This press published both contemporary works and classic fairy tales and folktales. Years were spent by the Grimm Brothers in Germany collecting traditional folktales from peasants. Their work was revised and released in 1812. The published version did not contain anything that was deemed offensive to elites or inappropriate for youngsters.
