Detailed Solution

In the book 'A History of British India', the author, James Mill, divided Indian history into three periods, i.e., Hindu, Muslim and British. However, nationalist historians later rejected this periodisation. As the skewed version of Indian history spread, James Mill, in his book, equated the British time with enlightenment and progress, whereas the period before British control was associated with darkness, ignorance, and superstition. Scholars questioned this classification by James Mill and looked down upon it because other religions were present during the times that Mill labelled as Hindu or Muslim. It was also unjust to divide the ages according to the faith of the kings. Furthermore, not all of ancient India's monarchs practised the same religion.
