Detailed Solution

In the context of France, the 'Tennis Court Oath' took place on June 20 1789. The Tennis Court Oath was an act of resistance by the members of the Third Estate during the meeting of the Estates General. These underprivileged members felt they would be outnumbered by the two privileged classes of the nobility and the clergy. During the meeting, they were locked out of the meeting hall at Versailles, so they moved to the nearby tennis court. There, they swore to remain united until France had a written constitution in place. King Louis XVI gave in to the Third Estate's pressure and ordered the clergy and nobles to join the Third Estate in the National Assembly on June 27.
