We have given a rectangle ABCD.
We know that the opposite sides in a rectangle are equal.
Therefore from the figure, we have,

x + y = 22 (1) x − y = 16 (2)

Adding equation (1) and equation (2), we get,

2 x = 38 ⇒ x = 19
