In the first decade of the 20th century, a series of changes affected the pattern of Industrialisation in India. The Swadeshi movement gained traction in the first decade of the twentieth century. Nationalists organised a boycott of foreign clothing. Industrial organisations banded together to protect their collective interests, putting pressure on the government to increase tariff protection and make other concessions. Since 1906, when Chinese and Japanese mills flooded the Chinese market, Indian yarn exports to China had declined. As a result, Indian industrialists began shifting from yarn to cloth production. Between 1900 and 1912, cotton piece-goods production in India more than doubled. During the First World War, when Britain was busy producing war supplies for the army, Indian industrialists strengthened their position by substituting foreign goods and capturing the domestic market. Thus Manchester goods were never able to regain their former position in the Indian market after the war.
