The Indian Constitution has a subject-wise division of central and state legislative powers. It is mentioned in the Seventh Schedule of the Constitution in detail. This division of legislative powers is divided into three lists: (1) Union List, (2) State List, and (3) Concurrent List. The subjects mentioned under the Union List come under the union or central government. Keeping them on any other list can hinder national growth and security. The subjects mentioned under the State List come under the legislation of the states only. Finally, the Concurrent List contains subjects that both the central and the state governments can legislate upon.
