In the mid-8th century, Dantidurga overthrew his chalukya ruler. They proclaimed their independence from their masters as they grew in strength and wealth. They were initially under the control of the Chalukyas of Karnataka. A Rashtrakuta chief named Dantidurga deposed his Chalukya overlord in the middle of the eighth century by engaging in a ceremony known as hiranya-garbha (literally, the golden womb). When this ritual was carried out with the assistance of Brahmanas, it was believed to cause the sacrificer to "rebirth" as a Kshatriya, even if he was not one by birth.
