Detailed Solution

In the Roman Empire, pepper was known as Black Gold.
Trade has been around since ancient times, and normally the traders had to travel long distances to distant places to buy and sell things. This trading also helped in sharing cultures and ideas of different countries with each other. The traders used to carry goods to Rome through ships and caravans, thus establishing good trade relations with Rome, and many Roman coins have also been found in South India, proving the trade relations with Rome. The southern part of India was famous for gold, pepper, spices, and stones. Pepper became the most valuable item in the Roman Empire and hence was named ‘Black gold’ in Roman Empire.
