Any liquid fuel specifically created for use in a diesel engine, a form of internal combustion engine in which fuel ignition occurs without a spark as a result of compression of the input air and then injection of fuel, is known as diesel fuel, sometimes known as diesel oil. Diesel fuel hence requires favourable compression ignition properties. The most prevalent type of diesel fuel is a particular fractional distillation of petroleum fuel oil, however non-petroleum alternatives like biodiesel, biomass to liquid (BTL), or gas to liquid (GTL) diesel are being researched and accepted more frequently. In some academic circles, petroleum-derived diesel is sometimes referred to as petrodiesel to distinguish between these varieties.
