In the seventeenth century, the administration of the Ahoms became centralised.
The Ahom state functioned upon forced labour. The forced labourers were known as paiks.
People shifted from heavily populated areas to less populated areas. Each village in the state had to send some paiks by rotation. This resulted in clans breaking up and thus making the administration more centralised. Adult males served as army men. In non-war times, they engaged in building dams, irrigation systems, and other public works. Society was divided into clans or khels. A Khel generally controlled several villages. The village community gave land to the peasants.
