In the twelfth century, Ajmer was the capital of Chauhan kings.
Ajmer served as the Chauhan kings' capital before changing to serve as the Mughals' suba capital. From 1950 to 1956, Ajmer existed as an independent state within India. Ajmer was created in 1950 from the land of the formerly independent province of Ajmer-Merwara, which joined the Indian Union on August 15, 1947. It created an enclave within the Rajasthan state.
