In the village, Bachchu Manjhi was working as a Mason. He lived there with his wife and children. But as he did not get the masonry work daily, he could not feed his family due to a lack of money and resources. So, he decided to shift to the city. He moved from his village in Bihar to the nearby town and bought an old rickshaw, whose payment he made in instalments. In the town, he works as a cycle rickshaw puller to earn a better income daily to feed his family. He stays in a rented room with his friends and earns Rs. 200 to 300 daily. He used to visit his family 2 to 3 times a year, and his wife also made money by working as a farm labourer.
