The first cotton industry in India was established in Bombay in 1854. Gradually, cotton and jute mills were started in other parts of the country. Thus, in Ahmedabad, sometimes known as the "Manchester of India," the opening of the Shahpur plant in 1861 marked the city's extraordinary rise as one of the world's most critical cotton-producing regions. The entrepreneur Ranchhodlal Chhotalal started The Ahmedabad Spinning and Weaving Company Ltd. in May 1861.
