The nature of the species formed when ammonia is dissolved in water, ${\mathrm{NH}}_4\mathrm{OH}$ has been debated. Some authors argue that ammonium hydroxide is the hydroxy salt of the ammonium ion, i.e. ${\mathrm{NH}}_4+ \mathrm{HO}-$, but it appears to be more widely accepted that ammonium hydroxide is ammonia hydrogen bonded to a water molecule.
