Only manual labour was capable of producing a variety of goods. Uniforms and other standardised products for a mass market were the focus of machine production. However, there was frequently a market for products with elaborate designs and distinct shapes. The aristocracy and bourgeoisie of Victorian Britain valued hand-made goods over those created by machines. Products created by hand have come to represent sophistication and class. They had better finishes, were created one at a time, and had more sophisticated designs. They wanted to be seen as different from the masses, upon whom they looked down. The mass-produced goods were associated with the common people and exported to colonies.
