Detailed Solution

The jute producers of Bengal exported their jute in the form of gunny bags in the early 20th century. The jute producers of Bengal grew raw jute which was processed in factories to produce gunny bags. They were then exported to various parts of the world. However, as gunny exports declined during the Depression years, the price of raw jute dropped by more than 60%. With ever-declining prices, peasants who had borrowed money to cultivate jute in the hopes of greater prices or more productivity found themselves in a never-ending cycle of debt.
