Let P (−3, 3) divide the line segment joining the points A (−4, −1), and B (−2, 7) in the ratio k : 1.

By section formula, we know that the coordinate of the point which divides the line segment joining the points (x1, y1) and (x2, y2) internally, in the ratio

m: n are mx2+nx1m+n,my2+ny1m+n.

-3,3=k×-2+-4k+1,k×7+-1k+1=-2k-4k+1,7k-1k+1

-3=-2k-4k+1,3=7k-1k+1

-2k-4=-3k-3

k=1

 k : 1 = 1:1

Thus, point P divides the line segment joining the points A and B internally in the ratio 1:1.
