J.J. Thomson was awarded the Nobel prize in Physics in the year 1906 for his work on the discovery of electrons. He proposed that an atom consists of a positively charged sphere and the electrons are embedded in it. The atom as a whole is electrically neutral as the negative and positive charges are equal in magnitude.
