Detailed Solution

Shifting cultivation, called Milpa in Mexico, is a form of primitive subsistence agriculture were the cultivators clear a patch of land, strip it off all the present vegetation and set it on fire. The ashes are mixed with the soil as manure and crops are sown. It is practised in the thickly forested area of the Amazon basin, tropical Africa, Southeast Asia, and Northeast India. Hence, it is referred to by different names, such as Jhumming in northeast India, Milpa in Mexico, Roca in Brazil, and Ladang in Malaysia.
