Detailed Solution

In the north to south direction, the latitudinal extent influence the duration of the day and night. The equatorial region is prone to direct rays of the sun. To the north and south of the Equator lie the tropics, where the sun’s rays fall with the least slanting. As we move up, the amount of sunlight received decreases with the increase in latitude. The sun seems to rise in the northeast and set in the northwest. Similarly, going up to the temperate latitudes, the amount of sunlight decreases even further. This directional change in day and night with latitudinal extent is the result of the slightly tilted position of the earth on its axis. This tilt in the axis of rotation of the Earth is responsible for the difference in the length of days and nights in different seasons.
