The first spinning and weaving mill opened in 1874 at Madras.
Bengal's first jute mill opened its doors in 1855, followed by a second one in 1862. The Kanpur location of the Elgin Mill was founded in the North in 1860. The first cotton mill in Ahmedabad was built a year later. The first Madras spinning and weaving mill started operating in 1874. One such machine was the Spinning and weaving mill installed in Madras by the Indian entrepreneurs.
