Raja Rammohan was well versed in Sanskrit, English and Persian.
The challenges experienced by widows particularly moved Rammohun Roy. He launched an offensive against the Sati custom. Sanskrit, Persian, and other Indo-European languages were among Rammohun Roy's specialities. He tried to demonstrate through his writings that ancient writings did not support the practice of burning widows. Several British authorities had already begun to criticise Indian traditions and customs by the first decade of the nineteenth century. As a result, Sati was outlawed in 1829. Rammohun's approach was followed by later reformers, who followed in his footsteps.
