Gandhi saw an opportunity in the Non-Cooperation Movement to bring Muslims under the umbrella of a unified national movement. The Ali brothers; Mohammad Ali and Shaukat Ali launched the Khilafat Movement in 1920 to restore the position of Khalifa. Muslims considered the religious head the Caliph (or Khalifa) sultan of Turkey. During the 2nd World War, the British threatened Turkey by weakening the Khalifa's position which led Muslims to adopt an aggressive anti-British attitude. This movement was supported by Gandhiji and INC which resulted in Hindu-Muslim unity. Along with this movement Gandhi also started a non-cooperation movement (NCM) for swaraj as its ultimate aim in NCM.
