The right to vote is not given to women in Saudi Arabia.
The king nominated members of the consultative legislative council under the authoritarian monarchy of Saudi Arabia. Before the September 2011 declaration by King Abdullah, only males over 30 years of age may serve as lawmakers. According to his September 2011 declaration, women are now eligible for appointment to the consultation meeting. In January 2013, women participated in the consultation meeting for the first time, filling 30 seats. In 2005 and 2011, women were not allowed to vote or run in Saudi Arabia's first local elections in decades. They campaigned for legislation in the 2011 municipal elections without registering to vote. In September 2011, King Abdullah said that women would be permitted to vote and run in local elections in 2015. Even though King Abdullah had passed away before the 2015 municipal elections, women were permitted to vote and run for office for the first time in the country's history.
