China was the kind of print technology developed when the Sumerian and proto-Elamite civilizations used cylinder seals to certify documents written in clay. As early as 3500 BCE, the history of printing started. Other early forms include hammered coinage, block seals, pottery imprints, and cloth printing. Initially, in China, a method of printing patterns on cloth such as silk and woodblock printing for texts on paper originated in the 7th century during the Tang dynasty, as a result of which the spread of woodblock printing and book production in other parts of Asia, such as Korea and Japan, started growing. The Chinese artisan Bi Sheng invented the movable type in the 11th century during the Song dynasty, but it received limited use compared to woodblock printing.
