In gymnosperms and angiosperms, the gametophytes are not free-living but(parasites) dependent on sporophytes for their nutrition.
In bryophytes gametophyte is the free living independent phase while the sporophytic stage is dependent and parasitic.

In pteridophytes,sporophytic stage is the dominant free living stage,the gametophyte though highly reduced is independent, and it is known as prothallus.

In algae,haploid gametophytic stage is only seen through out the life cycle.Zygote is the only diploid stage which undergoes meiosis immediately.
