Indian Forest Service was established in 1864. The British required forests on a massive scale to build ships and railways. They felt that the locals’ use of forest produce and reckless cutting of trees by traders could destroy forests. For expert advice, they invited Dietrich Brandis from Germany. Incidentally, he became the first Inspector General of Forests in India. He suggested setting up the Indian Forest Service in 1864 to help the government maintain forests and restrict the entry of locals.
