Detailed Solution

The British reached India in search of timber for building their ship and railways during the 19th century.
At the beginning of the 19th century, there was a decrease in the number of oak trees in Britain. Within a decade, many trees in India were cut down by the Colonialists. And during the same time, there was a spread of railways in India. The increase in railways created more demand for timber. Wood was needed as fuel for running the locomotive and laying railway lines; sleepers were required to keep the tracks together. As a result, many trees were cut down, and many forests vanished.
