The first time Satyagraha was implemented was in Champaran, Bihar. Satyagraha was the brainchild of Mahatma Gandhi and the cornerstone of his philosophy. It was an alternative to the otherwise radical and violent movements for freedom. Mahatma Gandhi believed that without being aggressive, a satyagraha could fight against the British through non-violent means and be successful. Gandhiji organised the peasants to protest against the plantations of Indigo. The farmers had to grow the commercial crop without any payment and suffer the long-term consequences the crop had on their soils.
