During the 1920s, when the Indian independence movement was at its pinnacle point of strength, it was at this very point that Gandhi and other movement leaders went to gather people's support through civil disobedience and non-cooperation. This movement was on the verge of becoming successful. Still, at some point, the movement was getting out of the control of the conscience and ahimsa. It caused outrage in the masses, which led to the torching of a police station at Chauri Chaura in Uttar Pradesh, where 22 policemen were burnt alive in the incident. This erupted the conscience, which needed to be taken care of during the struggles as per Gandhi's vision. This urged Gandhiji to call off the movement.
