Detailed Solution

In Western ghat of southern India are the largest numbers of caves meant for the Buddhist monks located.
After the development of Mahayana Buddhism,  Buddhist ideologies began to spread to other parts of the world, especially in Central Asia and China and also in Korea, and Japan.  It also spread to Western and Southern parts of India.  As a result, many caves were hollowed out of the hills for the monks to live.  These caves are made on behalf of orders from Kings and Queens and some others are made by merchants and farmers. These caves are mainly located near the passes through the Western ghat. The roads that connected important ports on the coast with the cities in Deccan ran through these passes. Hence many of the traders should have stopped in these cave monasteries during their voyage.
