Detailed Solution

In the thirteenth century, Indian indigo was used to dye cloth in France, Italy, and Britain by manufacturers. The price of Indian Indigo was so high in the European markets that only a small amount of indigo reached there. Therefore, European manufacturers depended on another source to make blue and violet dyes. They depended on a plant called woad because its price was not as high as indigo. It was grown in temperate zones and was easily available in Europe. It was grown in some regions of Europe, including northern Italy, Germany, Britain, and southern France. The woad producers pressured the European government to ban the import of indigo because they were worried about the competition with indigo.
