In carding, fibre such as cotton or wool was prepared before spinning. Carding is a mechanical process that disentangles, cleans and intermixes fibres to produce a continuous web or sliver suitable for subsequent processing. It was done by passing fibres between differentially moving surfaces covered with card clothing, a firm and flexible material embedded with metal pins. It breaks the locks and unorganised clumps of the fibre and then aligns the individual fibre parallel to each other. Preparing wool fibre for spinning carding is the step that comes after teasing. That was the process of carding.
