Detailed Solution

In the Nij indigo cultivation, the planter produced indigo in lands he controlled.
Indigo Cultivation had two main systems, nij and ryoti. In the nij cultivation system, indigo was produced directly in the land the planter controlled. First, they either bought the land or rented it from other zamindars. Then they made indigo by directly employing hired labourers. Fertile land was required for the cultivation of indigo. Many ploughs and bullocks were required for nij cultivation. In the Ryoti cultivation system, the planters were forced to sign a contract or an agreement called Satta. Sometimes, village headmen were forced to sign the contract on behalf of the ryots. They were asked to cultivate indigo on at least 25% of their land.
