Detailed Solution

The Sri Lankangovernment passed an act in 1956 to declare Sinhala as the official language of Sri Lanka. This was an act of disregard to the Tamils. Many government and educational positions preferred Sinhalas over Tamils. Such majoritarian policies inculcated a feeling of alienation among the Tamils that led to struggles. The Sri Lankan Tamils initiated movements and parties to encourage the Tamil language as an official language of Sri Lanka. However, these demands were turned down by the government. Due to the inaction, the demand for an independent Tamil state arose from many political organizations in the 1980s. This political war between the communities soon turned into a massive conflict. This widespread conflict turned into a Civil War.
