The British recaptured Gwalior in 1858 under General Hugh Rose's army. Hugh Rose successfully regained Jhansi and Gwalior after the Revolt of 1857. A senior officer in the British Army, Hugh Rose was assigned command of the Central Indian Field Force during the Indian Rebellion of 1857. Under his leadership, the armies at Jhansi in April 1858, Lahore in May 1858, and Gwalior in June 1858 were all routed.
