In 1885, the European powers met in Berlin to divide the African territory amongst themselves.
The Berlin Conference of 1884–1885, also known as the Congo Conference or West Africa Conference, controlled European trade and colonisation in Africa during the New Imperialism era and took place at the same time as Germany's abrupt rise to imperial dominance. Otto von Bismarck, Germany's first chancellor, organised the Conference. A period of intensified colonial action by European powers, which resulted in the elimination or replacement of the majority of African autonomy and self-governance, was helped by the Conference.
