William Jones arrived in Calcutta in 1783. He was well-versed in Greek, Latin, French, and English and familiar with Arabic and Persian. After coming to India, he was eager to learn the sacred Indian literature in the Sanskrit language. He learned the Sanskrit language and grammar from the Pandits by devoting several hours daily. He set up the Asiatic Society of Bengal with other researchers with common interests in learning Indian languages, discovering the Indian heritage, translating Sanskrit and Persian to English, and publishing their findings so that others could read and learn too.
