In 1919, Gandhiji decided to launch a nationwide Satyagraha against the proposed Rowlatt Act.
The Rowlatt Act of 1919 gave the government vast power while giving the leaders no control. Despite the unanimous opposition of Indians, this measure was swiftly passed. However, it implied that the British government had the authority to detain any Indian leader without showing evidence of criminal activity. The Act also permitted the two-year imprisonment of political detainees without charge or trial. Thus, it significantly increased the government's ability to suppress political activity. Gandhi advocated nonviolent civil disobedience in opposition to such unfair policies. So he started a nationwide Satyagraha in opposition to the Rowlatt Act.
