In 1848, Japan received the very first hand press made from Europe. The first hand press produced in Europe that was shipped to Japan for use by the Japanese arrived in Nagasaki in 1848 and was furnished with Western printing ink and movable type. But following the 1614 ban on Christianity, Japan stopped using printing methods from the West. The Japanese preferred woodblock printing to replicate their semi-cursive lettering.
