In January 1915, Mahatma Gandhi organised satyagraha movements in various places after returning to India from South Africa.
First, he went to Champaran in Bihar in 1916 to support the peasants, in which they were forced to produce indigo crops and sell them at lower prices to the British government. They were not allowed to produce another crop on the same land, and it made their condition worse. The second satyagraha was in Kheda in Gujarat to support farmers. Because of the heavy rain, they lost 25% of their crops. Therefore, they wanted the suspension of their land revenue instalments. The third satyagraha was in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, to support the cotton mill workers. The prices went up, and the workers were demanding high wages. In the end, an agreement was finalised between the mill owners and workers. After the Jallianwala Bagh incident, the Rowlatt satyagraha was a widespread movement in north India. Crowds took to the streets and went on strike. There were clashes with police and attacks on government buildings. This movement spread violence, and seeing this, Mahatma Gandhi called off the movement.
