Napoleon Bonaparte was a brilliant military tactician who became the ruler of France following the war with Europe and the overthrow of the Directory rule. He proclaimed himself the French emperor. In the French constitutional referendum of 1804, the French people decisively supported Napoleon's accession to the position of emperor. Napoleon had several goals in mind when he decided to be crowned, including establishing a future empire and gaining respect in international royalist as well as Catholic circles. Napoleon received the crown from Pope Pius VII and put it on his head when he was 35 years old and the victor of Europe.
