In 1765 the Company was appointed as Diwan of Bengal.
The English East India Company came to India as merchant traders. They obtained the royal Farman by Mughals to trade duty-free within India. They established their base in Bengal. However, the nawabs often created problems for the duty-free trade of the British. This led to a conflict between the nawabs of Bengal and Company which culminated in the Battle of Plassey and Battle of Buxar. The British, after the battle of Buxar, were fed up with concessions. They wanted to expand themselves in India. Thus, they obtained the Diwani of Bengal in 1765 from the Mughal emperor. Through Diwani, the Britishers were allowed to obtain the revenue of Bengal. They used this revenue to finance the trade in India.
