The Indian Prime Minister, Shri Rajeev Gandhi, launched the Ganga Action Plan on January 14, 1986, with the primary goals of reducing pollution in the Ganga River and improving water quality. The plan was that household wastewater was to be intercepted, redirected, treated, and highly polluting units could be categorised to stop it. Home sewage treatment and diversion, as well as the presence of hazardous industrial chemical waste, was discovered to enter the river from highly polluting units.
