The Tawa dam began its construction in 1958 and was completed in 1978. For its construction, many people got displaced from their areas. And were deprived of their livelihood. This led to a mass movement. The displaced people didn’t get the deserved compensation. Few of them lived near the reservoir, and others took fishing as their means of livelihood. In 1994, the government allowed private contractors to fish in the Tawa reservoir. However, the private contractors didn’t allow the local people to fish. Therefore, the organisation Tawa Matsya Sangh was formed. They conducted rallies for their rights. Finally, in 1996, the Madhya Pradesh government gave the local people fishing rights. TMS helped people in doing their fishing.
