Detailed Solution

The Vernacular Press Act was passed in 1878 by the then Viceroy Lord Lytton. The emergence and popularity of the vernacular newspaper expressed nationalist sentiments and criticized the colonial government boldly, which worried the colonial government. The recent manifestation of patriotism in the Revolt of 1857 had made the government wary. They decided to bring measures to ensure stringent control of the press. The result was the Vernacular Press Act. The government now kept an eye on the vernacular newspapers of various provinces. It could censor reports and editorials regarded as a threat to British rule. The newspaper was warned if it published a seditious report, and the press and its printing machinery were seized if the warning was disregarded.
